Matthew One

Here are the books we've read so far - Luke, Acts, Genesis, and Exodus

Today, we start the book of Matthew.

Here's a link to the NIV (although I'm reading the NRSV):

1:1 - 17 - The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah

This follows the line of genealogy from Abraham to Jesus

1:18 - 24 - The Birth of Jesus

When Mary and Joseph were engaged she was found to be "with child from the Holy Spirit." Joseph thinks of leaving her, but an angel appears to him in a dream and tells him not to be afraid, that the child is from the Holy Spirit. 21. "She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." Joseph wakes up and does as the angel commands.

Question: In what ways does the birth of Jesus fulfill prophesy?

16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

I take this to mean avoid hypocrisy by praising the Lord for the benefit of others than God.
