Matthew Six

Chapter Six

1 - 16 The Piety that God Rewards

"Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them: for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven." (Don't be showy) "Don't heap up empty phrases . . ." (Mean what you say). In fact, Jesus teaches us how to pray the Lord's Prayer (9 - 15).

19 - 34 Orientation to God

19. Don't store up treasures on earth but in heaven
22. The eye is the lamp of the body (I take this to mean don't look at things you shouldn't, but my notes state that "The evil eye was a metaphor for stinginess or jealousy" which makes sense too.
25. Do not worry . . . (I like the idea that worrying is a sin - God will take care of me)

Question: Name three things Jesus specifically Jesus recommends we NOT do when we pray.

Answer: Do not store up treasures on earth (they'll decay) . . . store up treasures in heaven.

21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
