The land west of the Jordan was divided by lot among the 9 1/2 tribes. Eleazar, son of Aaron, was high priest and supervised the casting of the lots. Since Jacob had adopted Manasseh and Ephraim, sons of Joseph, there was a total of 12 tribes.
Caleb is given his own land (25 miles south of Jerusalem) as promised by Moses 40 years earlier.
Question: What did Caleb do to deserve his own land?
"So Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he whole-heartedly followed the Lord, the God of Israel." (14)
