During the time of the judges, there is a great famine. Ruth has a husband, Elimelech, who dies and she is left with her two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, who married Moabite women, Orpah and Naomi. After 10 years, her sons die as well, and Ruth is stuck with her daughters-in-law.
Ruth gives them a chance to go back to their families. Orpah goes, but Naomi stays with Ruth. Thus it was that Naomi returned with the Moabite daughter-in-law, Ruth, who accompanied her back from the plateau of Moab. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.

Elimelech - husband
Naomi - wife
Mahlon and Kilion - sons
Orpah and Ruth - daughters-in-law
There is a great famine so the family moves from Bethlehem to the plains fo Moab on the east side of the Dead Sea. The men die after 10 years. The women decided to go back home in the west.
Naomi sends the girls back to their homes that they may find new husbands. They want to stay with her. Naomi insists that there is nothing she can do for them and that their futures are much better at their own homes. Orpah leaves, Ruth stays.
The people of Bethlehem welcome Naomi back but she wants them to call her Mara since she doesn't feel she's the same woman any more; that "she left full but is now empty", that God has "afflicted" her and "brought misfortune" to her.
