1-6 David hears that the Philistines were attacking a town called Keilah. He prayed and asked God if he should defend the town. God told him to defend it. David's men (600) were afraid, being outnumbered and isolated. David told them that God assured their victory and they were. David and his men hid out in this town after they saved it.

7-14 The only problem was that Saul heard of this battle, that David was hiding there, and decided to attack. Again, david prayed and God assured that, if he stayed, Saul would destroy the town if they didn't turn David over to Saul which they would do. So David and his men began running and hiding wherever they could in the desert.

15-29 David hid at Horesh in the Desert of Ziph. Jonathan found him there and reassured him of his allegiance and their friendship. The people of Ziph told Saul that David was hiding there. Saul told them to find out all his contacts and comings and goings. Saul and his army went to the mountain where David was hiding. David heard of this and they were chasing each other around the mountain when Saul received a report of a Philistine attack so they went to take care of that.
