The Philistines prepared for battle with and army of thousands. David and his men camped nearby. When they began to move out the Philistine army commanders asked Achish basically, "What's up with these Hebrews?" Achish told them that David and his men had been in his service for over a year and have been loyal and without fault. The commanders warned him that, even so, this would be a good opportunity to turn on them during a large battle. They told Achish to send him back and reminded him of the song where Saul killed thousands but David tens of thousands. Achish apologized to David but said that he had to go back to camp. They did. This is setting up future events.
