Mark 5

1 - 20 - The Gerasene Demoniac - On the other side of the sea, an unclean man who had been dwelling in the tombs and tormented by spirits ran to Jesus and prostrated himself before him. Jesus demands the unclean spirit leave the man. He asks the spirits name, and the spirit replies, "Legion is my name. There are many of us." Jesus sends the spirits into a herd of swine who run into the sea and drown. The man wants to join Jesus, but Jesus tells him to go home and tell his family.

21 - 43 Jairus' Daughter & Woman with a Hemorrhage - They return to the other side of the sea and a synagogue official named Jairus pleads with Jesus to lay his hands on his daughter who is dying. On their way, a woman who had been suffering hemorrhages for 12 years, touches his clothes and is healed. Upon arriving at Jairus' house, it is discovered that his daughter had died. Jesus says that the 12 years old girl is only sleeping. (it's interesting that the number 12 is in this story twice) Jesus says "Talitha koum" - "Little girl, I say to you, arise!" She wakes up and walks around. Jesus tells them not to tell anyone and to get the girl something to eat.

Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee to a Gentile area (as there are pig farmers there). Just when he got out of the boat a demon posessed man runs up to him. The man had been living in a cave used as a tomb. The people in the area had tried to control him by tieing him up and chaining him. Nothing could hold him. The demon immediately recognized "Jesus,Son of the Most High God" and begged Jesus not to torture him. Jesus told him to come out of the man and asked his name. His name was Legion. Notes indicate that a Roman legion of soldiers was about 6000 men. The demon begged to be allowed to go into a nearby pig heard which Jesus allowed. There were 2000 pigs! The pigs immediately ran into the lake and drowned. All the people of the area were scared to death and begged Jesus to leave which he did. The healed man told everyone he met about the experience.

When Jesus crossed back over the lake, a large crowd was waiting as usual. A synagogue ruler, Jairus, was waiting to ask him to heal his daughter who was dying. On the way to see her a "woman who had suffered from bleeding for 12 years" was in the crowd, had enough faith in Jesus that she felt if she merely touched his robe she would be healed. She did so and was healed. Jesus "realized that power had gone out from him" and asked who touched him. The woman spoke up. Jesus told her, "Your faith has healed you. Go and be freed from your suffering."

Just before they reached Jairus' house some people who had been attending his daughter met them and said that she was dead. Jesus told him not to worry and believe. When they got to the house Jesus told them she was asleep but the people laughed at him. Jesus took her hand and told her to get up which she did. Everyone was amazed. Jesus gave stirct instructions not to tell anyone what happened.
