Matthew Thirteen

Chapter Thirteen

Lots of parables

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=47&chapter=13&version=31

1. The Parable of the Sower

Jesus says some seeds fell on the path, rocky ground, among thorns, and on good soil

2. The Parable of Weeds among the Wheat

3. The Parable of the Mustard Seed

4. The Parable of the Yeast

5. The Kingdom of Heaven is likened to a) treasure hidden in a field, b) a merchant in search of fine pearls, and c) a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind.

6. Jesus: " . . . every scribe who has been traine for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old."

Finally, Jesus goes home and is rejected by the locals who knew him going up. "Isn't that the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us?" So much for the home town advantage. . . .

Question: Why does Jesus say he speaks in parables?
